Some time ago, I had the opportunity to live in Rome for several months. Rome (and all of Italy) is a beautiful city with great people and nice views. Such an introduction would probably suit most European capitals. Rome is beautiful ... but sometimes I missed the English-speaking Netherlands.
Housing
Well Rome is very expensive. If you would like to stay for 2 months in 4 stars hotel you probably gonna spend about 5-8k USD for 2+2 family. It depends on the season, but my impression is that in the winter season, hotels tend to be cheaper than the offers from Airbnb. If you are planning a trip in the summer season, I definitely recommend Airbnb. Also usually in hotels there is a better internet connection, so you can work without any problems.
If you would like to look for apartment rental offers, the best place is Immobiliare. However, renting an apartment usually has a minimum 6-month Rental Period, so if you want to stay only for 2-3 months, Booking or Airbnb is definitely a better solution.
Coworking space
When you work remotely, often a hotel room or small apartment could not meet all your requirements (especially when you live with your family). I have worked in several offices, some of them were of good quality, in my opinion this is not the same what London or Amsterdam could offer you, but still they are pretty good.
I mean by that the quality like location, office building class, equipment, etc. The prices that apply in Rome are quite high, they vary between 100-500 EUR per month.
Language issue
According to Wikipedia 25-30% of people speak English in Italy. I would say even less. Of course we should not expect from any country to be a fluent English speaker. But in everyday life it is very problematic, even when doing simple shopping or you try to order some food or make a small talk. By comparison, in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden, around 90% of people are English-speaking.
Tech events
There are quite a few local recurring community meetings. However, many of them are in Italian. So sometimes it's better to stay online and attend the meeting via zoom.
(Pre)Schools
It depends what lifestyle you prefer. But if you have children, you must take into account the cost of 1k-3k USD per month for an English-speaking school. As a rule, employers cover a large part of these costs - which does not change the fact that it is sooooo expensive.
My feelings
Rome is a great city with a lot going on. It is quite expensive and you must at least learn some basic Italian to be efficient in it. But if you have such an opportunity to go there, be sure to check this place on Earth.
Fortunately, there are such applications as Booking, Uber, Airbnb, Takeaway or Google Translator, you will certainly be able to survive in Rome for several months 🏄. I would have forgotten about the weather as it is (IMHO) one of the best in Europe.
Grazie Italia per l'ottimo soggiorno, ci vediamo di nuovo!
